Peek at my Potty, plus a Cutting Edge Stencil GIVEAWAY!

 Sep 30, 2011

(giveaway now closed)

People often ask me why I don't feature my own home or projects on my blog.  Well, if I had something cool to show off, I would!  But my house is kind of boring, especially compared to some of the mind-boggling awesomeness I see daily in Bloglandia.  The previous owners of this house also had an intense love affair with the colors red (tile), orange (cabinets), brown (carpet), and maroon (countertops), and, inexplicably, gold glitter (plastered on random surfaces, no joke, we had to remove it with a belt sander, it took 3 entire days), so in the couple of years we've been here, we've been slowly undoing all that mess while still trying to figure out what we want it to be.

One room the previous owners hadn't touched was our half-bath downstairs.  No paint, no faux brick murals like they blessed us with in the other parts of the house, no gold glitter thank heavens, no nothing.  Basically a sink and a toilet.  Well guess what?  I finally did something about it!  Check it out:

Woo!  Do you like it?  Isn't that better?  I'm pretty happy with it.  Everyone who sees it seems to like it too, if only because I force absolutely anybody who drops by to take a look. Friends, neighbors, the UPS man, the guy who fixed my sprinklers today, I don't care, I'm so proud of it!

Gray paint is Weathered Wood by whatever the cheapest brand at Walmart is. (my very favorite gray)
White paint is Whipped White by Dutch Boy Refresh Paint, (this stuff is great, it doesn't even smell!)
 Mirror is from Home Goods.
Light fixture (not that you can see it, someone please tell me how to take a picture of a light) was on clearance at Home Depot.

And the piece de resistance; the stunning stencil is the Zamira from Cutting Edge Stencils.

BEST PART:  Cutting Edge Stencils is going to give away any stencil design up to $50 to one lucky Better After reader!  Hooray!

Here is the stencil in action.  It was really easy to use once we got the hang of it.  You definitely want to use a foam roller like this and go v e r y   l i g h t l y  on the paint.  We did a light coat followed by a few minutes spent watching 30 Rock, followed by another light coat, then we'd move the stencil.  The cutouts on the bottom are there to help you line it up exactly when you move the stencil, and we didn't have any trouble staying on track.

That's not my burly arm up there, that is my husband Matt's.  I say "we" but I mean "he" because he did all the painting.  He tries to pretend he doesn't like it, but look at that grin.

I helped by watching 30 Rock while he painted and also taking stupid pictures of myself in the mirror.

I was VERY impressed with how well the stencil worked, the lines were so crisp and clean. I only ever had to do minor touch ups when we accidentally overloaded the paint brush, or around the back of the toilet where we gave up altogether and I free-handed it.  It was a little difficult getting into the corners with the stencil, but there are really helpful tips on their YouTube channel, which I wish I would have taken more advantage of.

All in all, this entire makeover took about 8 hours total, a pretty decent time-to-outcome ratio, I'd say.

I once heard that you should have something unexpected in every room, so this is it.  A tiny hot air balloon!  You can only see when you are standing at the mirror, it's like a little prize for washing your hands! Or I guess you can see it if you gaze upward while on the toilet, but who would do such a thing?

SO!  Would you like to win $50 toward any stencil of your choice from Cutting Edge Stencils?  (Almost all of their stencils are well under this price range.  The Zamira stencil that I used was $37.95).  They have so many styles to choose from, there really is something for everybody.

Enter below!  (I'm trying out this new Rafflecopter thingy to help make the giveaway entering process as easy as possible for you, we'll see how it goes ...)

3 chances to win!

Your bathroom looks amazing!! Looks like it came straight from a magazine. I've always been a little apprehensive about using stencils on a huge wall...but your DIY project makes it look much easier.

Stacie Larsen September 30, 2011 7:30 PM

LOVE the stencil! When we lived in Phoenix, I stenciled chili peppers all over my kitchen - it seemed like a Southwest thing to do. But this is waaaaay cooler and much more sophisticated than chili peppers! I want to do gray and white in my basement - will have to check out those colors! It is wrong to say "yumm" about a bathroom makeover?

Leilani September 30, 2011 7:30 PM

I'd love to stencil my bedroom! Your bathroom looks great!

Molly September 30, 2011 7:58 PM

I would choose the Casablanca Allover stencil. I actually have a wall in the living room I'm painting that I am planning to stencil. But because I'm a cheapskate I've been trying to devise my own stencil. This would be soooo much better!

BEAUTIFUL! very inspiring- I thought it was wallpaper at first glance. Looks perfect.

Lea October 1, 2011 5:42 AM

That mirror is a huge batch of awesomesauce! I actually gasped when I saw it. This space is totally worth the eight hours and Matt spent in there, and if my bath looked like that I'd flag down cars and make total strangers look at it.

Krista October 1, 2011 5:46 AM

What a fabulous makeover! Maybe a stenciled wall is just what we need to make our half-bath more exciting!

Lea October 1, 2011 5:55 AM

Pick my favorite stencil? You're kidding, right? That's like asking me to choose which of my kids is my favorite...I love 'em all...just in different ways for different things. The Casablanca stencil is amazing, but so is the All Over Paisley, and that Splash Wall Pattern. I've got serious wall envy goin' on right now.

They have some great stencils. I like the lily scroll all over but I would probably choose the one you did. It looks so great

That after is amazing! I would love to win one of their stencils.

Maatkara October 1, 2011 7:47 AM

Beautiful! I've always wanted to try stenciling but I'm afraid I'd put like 10 hours into it and it would like crap and I'd have to repaint the whole thing!

Rita October 1, 2011 7:47 AM

Your bathroom looks AMAZING!! I have a half bath that I need to do something with... it looks a lot like your before picture. But I live in Tucson, and I think all the builders just put the EXACT same fixtures in EVERY house in Arizona! I hadn't thought of doing a stencil, but I am really considering it now!

Thanks for the chance to win. I'm coveting the Vision all over stencil. Your bathroom looks amazing! Now I'm kinda curious to see the before pics of the rest of your home. I like sparkles ;)

ChanandJess October 1, 2011 9:16 AM

Gorgeous!!! :D I would love to win a stencil!!! I do the same thing to people when I've completed a project, I drag them through the house and show everything off.

Shayla October 1, 2011 9:17 AM

Looks awesome! I am also in love with grey at the moment....so many awesome color combos with it. I would choose the acacia allover stencil as I think it would be awesome to use for some artwork as well as on walls. I also liked on fb. =)

Bob October 1, 2011 9:21 AM

Nice job! And it only took 8 hours? Amazing. Love the gray color palette. Gray is the new black, I've heard. Going with a neutral is a good thing.

Martha October 1, 2011 9:24 AM

I was so impressed by your stenciling that this is the first contest that I'm going to TRY to enter. I agree with Meadowlark; this is CONFUSING! Unless you understand it. And then it's NOT confusing. In any case, I would choose the 'Lilly Scroll Allover Stencil'. Off I go. I'll wish me luck!

Chickdey October 1, 2011 9:25 AM

Oh, I love those stencils, and your powder room is so pretty!

Ellen October 1, 2011 9:47 AM

I really love that "allover hourglass" stencil - can totally picture it in our dining room above some board and batten wall treatment. (which we haven't done yet, but I'd love to!)

Kristin October 1, 2011 9:55 AM

I've had my eye on the big wheel stencil for a while now. I'd love to do my LR wall with that! Thanks!
